One day, an undertaker called the parish to report a parishioner’s death. But neither the pastor nor his assistant recognized the name, even though the man had faithfully attended Mass. When they checked the records, his name was there, age, address, and other details. But it raised a deeper question: Did they truly know him?
This reminds us of something vital. Knowing about someone isn’t the same as truly knowing them. And in today’s Gospel, Jesus says: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Jesus knows his followers personally and intimately—this is not distant, factual knowledge. It’s a relationship.
Today, on Good Shepherd Sunday, we reflect on Jesus as the Shepherd who knows us by name and leads us to eternal life. It’s also Vocation Sunday, when we pray that more may respond to the call to serve the Church.
Belonging to Jesus involves three things:
Believing – Faith is the entry point into his flock.
Listening – We must hear and take his Word to heart.
Following – We live out his teachings, even when it’s difficult.
This relationship is not one-sided, we must freely choose to follow him. And following Jesus doesn’t mean a life without hardship. In fact, trials often deepen our faith and trust in the Shepherd who never abandons us.
Belonging to Jesus also means belonging to his flock—the Church. We’re not meant to walk this path alone. In community, we find support, encouragement, and companionship.
Jesus laid down his life for everyone. His invitation is open to all. As we journey together, let us pray for those discerning vocations, and for ourselves, that we may truly listen, follow, and remain faithful to the Good Shepherd who leads us to life.
